Is Matheus Academy a religious school?
No. We are a secular organization open to all beliefs, searchers and non-believers alike. We practice mindful spirituality in our daily rituals and the importance of Judeo-Christian history in the development of western civilization and government. Our teaching philosophy stresses universal values, morals, and ethics.
What do you mean by a “purpose-driven life”?
We believe that every individual has a special purpose in life. We know character is tested via trials and obstacles, and it is through these that our virtues of wisdom, service, temperance, and courage are revealed. Our mission is to help you guide your child through their journey to finding fulfillment and happiness.
What is a Daily Hero’s Journal?
Your child must become the central character in his/her life story. A Daily Hero’s journal is a documentation of your child’s life - the trials, obstacles, pain, and sacrifice, and also the growth, triumphs, and revelations. Imagine it as the source material for a film featuring your child - a diary with a purpose.
What is an independent learner vs guided learner?
At Matheus academy, our ultimate objective is to raise a well-rounded, confident, independent learner. However, their independence is also dependent on time, maturity, and skills. This is why, at early levels, we guide our students more to give confidence and help them gain necessary skills. As the student grows, we give them more independence.
What is the Socratic method and how is it different than public schools?
The Socratic method is attributed to Socrates of ancient Athens, Greece. Instead of “teaching” his students, Socrates simply asked poignant questions and let them come up with the answers. It is different than the traditional method of telling or lecturing students, then later testing them on their ability to recall the teacher’s answers. The Socratic method asks the student to come up with their own answers, so they don’t have to memorize and regurgitate. Curiosity, independence, personal voice, reasoning, and other key skills are the focuses of the Socratic method.
Why do you use mixed classes?
At Matheus, we believe that leadership and followership are key skills needed to be successful in the future. By having mixed classes of similar aged students, the opportunity to lead, as well as support and follow presents itself to all students. This is how leadership is taught at Matheus - not just as a theory, but a real life practice.
Do all children do “passion projects”?
Yes. Discovering individual passion and purpose is just as important as any academic endeavor. Engaging in self-directed projects from an early age allows students to gain key skills and build responsibility for results. It encourages doing and achieving, instead of just knowing and receiving grades. It is a shift in mindset from academic to market-driven.
Can Matheus Academy serve special needs students?
We are not trained to serve children with learning disabilities.
Do you test students prior to acceptance to programs?
In short, yes. For preschool and above programs we test all students to ensure that they have the knowledge and skills to benefit from a program such as ours.
What is Democratic Republicanism?
Democratic Republicanism is a form of government idealized by some of the United State’s own founding fathers, like Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and others. It serves as a starting point for many modern political systems.
